Artist Statement

People often ask me where I get my ideas for my artwork. Repeatedly, I look back to the time when I was sketching out the idea and it is very hard to remember what my thought process was at the time. Seeing as most of my artwork is surrealistic, I attribute most of my ideas to my subconscious.

Most of the time when I start creating an image, I try to come up with random imagery or use pieces from vivid dreams. I believe doing this adds an enigmatic style to the work. Initially, I focus on the composition and other visual elements such as depth and contrast and how objects relate to each other. In a world flooded with images, people often look at an image and quickly go on to the next. I want people to look at what I do and let their mind wander in to the new dimension that I have created.

All art influences me in some way, whether I like it or not. When I see artwork that I do not like, I either think of ways that it could be done better or use it as an example of something not to do. When I see artwork I do like, I first study it and try to see what makes it work, then I think of ways to incorporate those ideas into my own work.

The main thing that pushes me to be an artist is that it is a way for me to say something that words fail to describe. It is through art that I feel I can communicate and express my ideas effectively. Illustration and graphic design are based on communicating through imagery and are the fields that I believe I can excel in. There is really no other career I can envision myself doing for the rest of my life.
